Head of Research & Development – Medical Simulation Innovation Leader

Role Overview
This is a broad role including product development, quality, manufacturing, maintenance of regulatory clearances and sustaining support for commercialized products.
As Head of R&D, you will lead product development efforts, build and mentor a high-performing R&D team and external suppliers, and establish best-in-class engineering practices to deliver groundbreaking simulation solutions. With your systems engineering expertise and deep understanding of product development processes, you will drive innovation, oversee contract manufacturing and supply chain activities, and ensure our solutions exceed customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Team Building
- Build and mentor a high-performing R&D team with a focus on collaboration, accountability, and innovation.
- Foster a positive and results-oriented team culture to ensure operational effectiveness.
- Balance internal and external resources to maximize team capability and deliver key milestones.
Product Development Process Optimization
- Develop and implement efficient, customer-focused product development processes that accelerate time-to-market.
- Establish clear stage-gate processes, ensuring comprehensive design reviews with stakeholders.
- Define and execute comprehensive product roadmaps, aligning with business objectives and customer insights.
- Oversee technology management for future projects involving AI, VR, and AR to advance training capabilities.
Systems Engineering and Innovation
- Lead the integration of complex hardware and software systems to develop best-in-class medical simulation technologies.
- Manage cross-functional engineering teams to deliver scalable, user-centered solutions.
- Drive the adoption of emerging technologies and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
Manufacturing and Supply Chain Oversight
- Oversee contract manufacturing partnerships to ensure efficient production and consistent quality.
- Develop effective strategies to manage inventory visibility, delivery scheduling, and supplier relationships.
- Ensure robust supplier quality processes to maintain product consistency and reliability.
Regulatory and Quality Leadership
- Develop and maintain compliant quality systems to meet international standards (e.g., CE Mark, China compliance).
- Ensure all designs align with safety, performance, and environmental requirements.
- Maintain formalized product test procedures, customer validation protocols, and product documentation.
Strategic Partnerships
- Develop and manage partnerships with academic institutions, industry experts, and technology providers to foster innovation.
- Engage with international partners to support product development and global market entry.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in R&D leadership, preferably in medical devices, simulation, or healthcare technologies.
- Proven experience developing and managing R&D teams with a track record of delivering complex products.
- Strong systems engineering expertise with experience in hardware/software integration.
- Expertise in product development processes, including stage-gate models, design reviews, and customer validation.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers and managing supply chain partnerships.
- Strong leadership, mentorship, and organizational development skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, allocate resources effectively, and drive on-time delivery.
- Exceptional communication skills and the ability to align teams around shared goals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing AI, VR, or AR technologies for healthcare applications.
- Familiarity with international regulatory standards such as ISO 13485 and CE marking processes.
- Hands-on experience working in dynamic, fast-paced and lean startup environments.
