DESCRIPTION

The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Associate Athletic Trainer/Director of Rehabilitation. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 35,000 students and is one of the University of California's 10 campuses. As an integral member of the Sports Medicine team and Athletic Performance Unit, the incumbent will play a critical leadership role in the holistic, year-round care of UC San Diego scholar-athletes. The incumbent will demonstrate professional maturity and leadership acumen, bring a growth mindset, strong interdisciplinary collaboration skills, and a systematic, performance-focused approach to rehabilitation and reconditioning. The candidate should have diverse experience with a track record of innovation, leadership and impact, and a background in elite, interdisciplinary environments (high-performance preferred).

Roles include applying advanced concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex athletic training services, assuming administrative leadership of related sports medicine programs, and demonstrating evidence-based practice in clinical and professional problem solving. Responsibilities include prevention, management, evaluation, treatment and care of athletic injuries, coordination of return-to-sport programs, referrals, and follow-up care. The incumbent will lead the sports medicine and athletic performance staff to uphold best practices in program design and implementation, collaborate with the performance coordinator on baseline injury measurements, and participate in initial case management meetings with coaches and staff. The role also involves policy and protocol development for equipment use, injury prevention, and treatments, as well as serving as an approved Preceptor for athletic training students.

Qualifications

• Must have a minimum of seven years experience in athletic training working under direct supervision of a NATABOC-certified Athletic Trainer.
• For positions in Sports Medicine, maintain current knowledge of applicable rules/standards of the affiliated athletic conference, NCAA/NAIA, and related associations; avoid violations.
• Advanced manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine; proficiency with athletic training aids; basic first aid/CPR.
• Current certification in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED, or equivalent. NATABOC certification in good standing. Instructors in First Aid/CPR/AED are highly preferred.
• Demonstrated supervisory skills to lead, motivate, delegate, train, supervise and evaluate staff and student employees.
• Advanced knowledge of athletic injury prevention and administration of modalities, devices, and techniques; first-aid and injury assessment and treatment.
• Experience using physical agents and modalities; extensive rehab methods for prevention, evaluation, care and treatment of athletic injuries.
• Experience developing mental health screenings and emergency plans; ability to work with students of concern.
• Strong knowledge of teaching techniques to train student interns; knowledge of coaching principles for various sports related to injury prevention.
• Computer skills including systems such as Smartabase and Catapult.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion; casework management experience with similar volume of sports.
• Ability to work collaboratively, organize and prioritize work, analyze programs and procedures, and make recommendations; strong written and verbal communication.
• Knowledge of procurement and campus budget for athletic equipment and supplies; ability to manage timelines and multi-task effectively.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work with a diverse population of students, staff, supporters, and the public; strong networking and collaboration abilities.
• Professional appearance and demeanor in all interactions.
• Knowledge of electronic medical records systems and local medical facilities for emergencies, referrals, and treatments.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $79,200 - $143,400 (prorated if appointment percentage <100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $37.93 - $68.68

Salary notes: Factors in determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, and other needs. The posted range may be broader based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining (where applicable).
