Primary Responsibilities

HDR has an opening for a Hydropower Engineering Manager to join our Southern California (SoCal) team and be part of our premier National Hydropower Practice. The practice is recognized by ENR as a top firm serving hydropower owners and operators. This position combines leadership, business development and operations management duties for activities led and/or supported by the SoCal Hydro BCL and hydropower team.

Responsibilities include leading the hydropower engineering practice in the SoCal area, directing SoCal hydropower client and business development activities, leading or supporting proposals and pursuits, serving as a Project Manager or technical lead on projects, growing the local team in SoCal, and collaborating with other Areas and teams for successful execution of SoCal hydropower projects.

Business development involves hydropower client development, management, strategic planning and execution. The candidate will build partnerships with SoCal Resources and Water teams, the National Hydropower Practice, and Power Sector teams to develop and execute a hydropower growth plan. The role includes participating in proposal development as champion and/or reviewer and active engagement in the hydropower industry through industry groups such as the National Hydropower Association.

Operations duties include growing and managing hydro engineering and design teams within SoCal's Resources group, coordinating activities among hydropower engineering staff in SoCal's Resources and Water teams, and aligning with the National Hydropower Practice. The manager will help develop growth strategies and a multi-year hiring plan, oversee project execution, and serve as Principal-In-Charge or project manager on strategic, complex projects to maintain client relationships.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Master's in Engineering or Business Administration a plus
  • CA Professional Engineering registration (Electrical, Mechanical or Civil)
  • 15 years of relevant experience, including 10 years in hydropower, dam safety or related areas
  • Active involvement in professional or industry associations
  • Experience in business development and growing client relationships
  • Established relationships with hydropower clients is highly desired
  • Consulting or professional services operations experience with multi-discipline teams, or willingness to engage
  • Strong track record of project execution including schedule, budget, quality and client satisfaction
  • Solid business management skills and ability to navigate a matrix organization
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • 10 years of experience
  • Committed to quality and HDR values
  • Professional or engineering registration and related technical experience
  • Experience in developing and managing diverse teams
  • Ability to work cooperatively with area leaders and managers on business class efforts
  • Active participation in HDR's employee-owned culture is essential
