Overview

Director of Security Operations - 136812 at UC San Diego. This role reports to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) within Information Technology Services (ITS) and leads Security Operations and Identity and Access Management to advance the university's information security program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct oversight of two key strategic areas: Security Operations and Identity and Access Management, including incident response/threat detection, security engineering & services, Active Directory architecture/management, and Identity Management (access management, campus single sign-on, MFA, IAM architecture/design).
  • Assist the CISO with strategy and planning; drive the information security multi-year roadmap; maintain an overall security program; develop and maintain a team calendar to ensure deadlines and reporting requirements are met; contribute to project management and communications.
  • Help set the vision for the broader information security program in partnership with the CISO; foster a strong team culture within Security Operations and collaborate with OIA Risk Management and ITS teams.
  • Receive assignments in the form of objectives and determine how to allocate resources to meet IT compliance, privacy, and security goals; review and approve recommendations for functional programs; provide guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with policies.
  • Serve as a backup for the CISO during absences with appropriate ITS Senior Management Team oversight, ensuring smooth continuity of IT Services control.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of experience leading a team or IT organization.
  • Broad knowledge of information technology security functional areas as they relate to student data, health information, research subjects, finance, IT resources and applications, and general computer use practices.
  • Demonstrated advanced experience in information security within a higher education environment.
  • Understanding of privacy and security regulations and best practices, including federal and state laws, policies, standards, and regulations relevant to higher education, medical centers, and patient information.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans aligned with institutional goals.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience supervising technical staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CISSP or GIAC specializations or similar certifications

Special Conditions

  • Job offer contingent upon satisfactory background check results.
  • Must be able to obtain secret level security clearance.
  • For emergency situations, must be available 24/7.
  • Employee must be available to work evenings and weekends.
  • Employee must be available to travel as required.

Compensation and Work Arrangement

Salary range: $132,600 - $200,000 per year. Pay Transparency: Annual Full Pay Range: $132,600 - $259,800 (may be prorated based on appointment percentage). Hourly equivalent: $63.51 - $124.43. Worksite: Hybrid. Appointment Type: Career. Appointment Percent: 100%.
