Overview

A Mission Software Engineer develops and deploys software essential for a real-world mission in partnership with customers. The approach emphasizes end‑user operational needs and mission success over purely technical performance.

Role

As a Mission Software Engineer in the Mission Applications Group, you will work with tightly knit Agile teams to design, develop, and maintain software systems deployed to customer locations. You will ensure that software solutions meet the highest standards of quality, reliability, and performance.

What you will do

• System Integration: Write code that integrates various components into a single, cohesive system.
• Customer Collaboration: Work closely with end‑users and customers, typically military or government operators, to understand requirements and translate them into software features.
• Deployment and Field Testing: Travel to integration sites to build, test, and deploy software in real‑world operational environments.
• Triage and Debugging: Identify and resolve software and system failures during integration.

Who you are (Qualifications)

• Ability to obtain a security clearance; U.S. citizenship required by the U.S. Government.
• BS in Computer Science or related technical field with at least 5 years of work experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in Java; experience designing, building, testing, debugging, and maintaining a large codebase.
• Experience with object‑oriented programming principles, service‑oriented or micro‑service architectures, containerization/orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes, Agile lifecycle methodologies, and DevOps or CI/CD tools.
• Test‑driven development methodologies and a demonstrated ability to adopt new languages, libraries, and technologies.
• Organized, detail‑oriented, and able to work independently and collaboratively; effective communicator to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

Even better (Preferred)

• Active security clearance at the Secret level.
• Experience within the Department of Defense.
• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
• Located near STR office in Carlsbad, CA or near Honolulu, HI.
