About the Role
A global technology company is seeking a senior tax leader to oversee the State and Local Tax (SALT) function. This executive will manage compliance and strategy across state income, sales & use, property, and city/local taxes, while leading a team of three and advising executive leadership on SALT matters.
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in sales & use tax, experience with property and local tax, and a strong background in implementing and optimizing tax systems within a complex, high-volume B2C environment.
Responsibilities
- Define and execute the vision for the SALT function, ensuring alignment with broader corporate objectives.
- Serve as the primary advisor on state and local tax issues at the executive level.
- Oversee timely and accurate filings for state income, franchise, sales & use, city, and property tax.
- Manage preparation and review of SALT provisions under ASC 740.
- Develop best practices for multi-jurisdictional compliance governance.
- Lead selection, implementation, and optimization of sales tax systems (e.g., Vertex, OneSource).
- Oversee tax determination, exemption certificate management, and indirect tax data accuracy across ERP and billing platforms.
- Partner with IT, Finance, and Operations to ensure automation and integration of sales tax processes.
- Build scalable controls and reporting processes to streamline audits and minimize risk.
- Direct all SALT-related audits, appeals, and controversy resolution.
- Manage relationships with tax authorities and external advisors.
- Identify risks proactively and design controls to reduce exposure.
- Oversee preparation and review of reserves for state income, sales, city, and property tax.
- Lead SALT planning strategies to optimize effective tax rate and cash flow.
- Provide tax input on expansion, M&A, supply chain, and product launches.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and communicate operational impact.
- Partner with Finance, Legal, Sales, Real Estate, Procurement, and IT to embed compliance into business operations.
- Provide actionable SALT insights to senior leadership.
- Lead and develop a team of SALT professionals; manage external resources as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA, JD, or MST strongly preferred.
- 12+ years of progressive SALT experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership role.
