A leading global defense and communications technology company is seeking a Senior Laser Communications Engineer to play a pivotal role in the design, development, and integration of next-generation optical communication systems for space-based applications. This is a unique opportunity to take the lead on a critical subcontractor relationship, driving the delivery of an advanced Optical Head Assembly while collaborating with world-class optical SMEs and interdisciplinary teams.
As a Lead Systems Engineer, you'll be responsible for overseeing laser communications payload development from initial concept through to operational deployment. This role requires someone who not only possesses deep technical expertise in lasercom systems but also excels in stakeholder management, requirements engineering, and cross-functional coordination.
Lead technical oversight and management of a major subcontractor delivering a space-based Optical Head Assembly
Own and drive systems-level requirements derivation, interface definition, and documentation
Coordinate closely with subsystems and host platform teams to ensure end-to-end integration
Support advanced waveform and modem architecture development
Conduct detailed system modeling, simulation, and performance analysis
Collaborate across teams including software, RF, FPGA, business development, and integration
Lead and contribute to trade studies and technical strategy
12+ years in laser communications for space payloads, including architecture, design, and integration
3+ years hands-on experience with space-based lasercom systems through development, manufacturing, and operations
Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and manage subcontractors
Advanced skills in MATLAB and systems modeling
Strong foundation in electrical engineering principles and system-level thinking
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
U.S. Citizenship and active DoD Secret Clearance
Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically
Technically rigorous with a strategic mindset
