ERM is seeking a committed and knowledgeable Consultant, Asbestos Specialist to join the ERM team in Irvine, CA. This is a casual status position. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in asbestos management and a desire to broaden their knowledge and understanding of construction, demolition, production safety, and contaminated site investigation, remediation and management.
In this role, you will be responsible for development of sampling plans, management of sample collection and documentation, field sampling, report development and review, and client interfacing. The position will require work in related consulting fields including decommissioning, demolition, production safety, construction safety, air compliance, and contaminated site investigation.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Asbestos Field Sampling Technician on assigned site investigation, remediation, and decommissioning/decontamination/demolition environmental construction projects and to implement site‑specific Health & Safety Plans.
- Ensure appropriate level of PPE is available and is being used as required, as well as proper maintenance and sanitation of PPE.
- Collect asbestos samples in accordance with applicable regulatory guidelines and industry best practices to ensure accurate analysis and compliance.
- Verify communication systems are in place.
- Monitor conformance with safety and emergency procedures.
- Conduct daily safety briefings with the project field team.
- Oversee that safety equipment is maintained; establish and execute decontamination procedures.
- Monitor site conditions for asbestos clearance sampling.
- Exercise the authority to stop work, which will be executed upon determination of an imminent safety hazard or potentially dangerous situation (e.g., weather conditions, where this action is necessary).
- Exercise the authority to proceed with work after a stop‑work order after receiving verification from Partner‑in‑Charge or H&S team.
- Conduct behavior‑based safety observations and coordinate internal Event Communication System activity.
- Collect and evaluate observations by others.
- Maintain records.
- Management of sample collection and documentation.
- Complete and maintain required training, including:
- ERM Field Safety Officer Training Modules
- CSST – California Site Surveillance Technician
- 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER - desirable
- 8‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER Supervisor - desirable
- CPR/First Aid
- Bloodborne pathogens
- Confined space and excavation awareness - desirable
- Emergency preparedness
- Hazard recognition and job hazard analysis
- Incident investigation and root cause analysis
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, geology, environmental science, biology, industrial hygiene, or a related discipline; or the equivalency of 8+ years related experience in lieu of education (2 years for each 1 year of education), in addition to the required years of experience outlined below.
- 2+ years of relevant experience.
- California Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) – Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) or Certified Site Surveillance (CSST) Certification, current.
- California Department of Public Health – Certified Lead Sampling Technician or Certified Lead Inspector / Assessor.
- Good with computers including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CAD, etc.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Ability to travel within the state of California to client sites, and as well as other states throughout the U.S. based on business needs.
- Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.

For the Consultant, Asbestos Specialist casual status position, we anticipate an hourly rate of $36.54 – $46.83 USD. An employee's pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue‑based metrics, and business or organizational needs. This job may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are NOT bonus eligible).
