Overview


This full‑time, on‑site role will be supporting our San Diego, California location. The Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Engineer II/III will support the EHS Staff in maintaining policies/procedures required to adhere to CAES EHS Management and Technical Standards. The EHS Engineer will provide support to assist the organization in meeting and maintaining CAES's "No Harm" standard and ISO 14001 certification. The EHS Engineer will provide support for the site's safety programs including the ergonomics program, as well as any associated evaluations, inspections, training and record‑keeping necessary to promote the safest work environment possible. The EHS Engineer will, on occasion, assist the department in matters relating to the site's environmental responsibilities and have a good understanding of reporting metrics and drive continuous improvement by engaging the site's other business stakeholders.


Responsibilities



  • Regulatory compliance & permitting

    • Support environmental permitting and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including those related to air quality, wastewater, hazardous waste, and stormwater.

    • Prepare and submit permit applications, reports, and responses to regulatory agencies, including:


      • Air Pollution Control District (APCD)

      • Department of Environmental Health and Quality (DEHQ)

      • Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC)

      • Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB)

      • Cal/OSHA

      • City of San Diego Water & Fire Departments

      • County of San Diego Radiological Health




  • HSE program management: Ensure EHS policies and procedures reflect current regulatory requirements and industry best practices; develop and implement corrective actions and training programs; conduct regular workplace assessments and implement improvements; identify and assess environmental and ergonomic risk factors and recommend mitigation strategies; support or lead emergency response planning and drills.

  • Training, coaching & communication: Provide day‑to‑day HSE guidance to site personnel; coach employees and supervisors; develop, update, and deliver safety and environmental training programs; promote safety culture through effective communication; participate in Safety Committee meetings, team inspections, and Leadership Walks.

  • Monitoring & reporting: Complete required EHS tasks and inspections; track, analyse, and report performance metrics; provide backup support for chemical technician tasks as needed.

  • Other duties: Support continuous improvement initiatives; perform other related duties and special projects as assigned by the EHS manager.


Qualifications


Minimum



  • High school diploma (or equivalent)

  • Two (2) years of experience in the environmental, health, and safety field

  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance

  • This position requires access to technology, materials, software or hardware that is controlled by US export laws. In order to be eligible for this position, you must be a "US Person" under US export laws (or eligible for approval under a U.S. Government export license).


Preferred



  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Biology, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry.

  • Understanding of data analysis, trending, root‑cause problem solving and using measurements to drive process improvement.

  • Thorough understanding of ergonomic principles as applied to various work environments including industrial, manufacturing and office settings.

  • Enthusiasm for process improvement, a self‑starter driven to improve and sustain initiatives.

  • Familiarity with the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) method in defining risk associated with each step of a process or task.

  • Knowledge of federal/state/local regulations.

  • Data analysis.

  • Technical writing/interpretation of reports.

  • Microsoft Office and other software proficiency.

  • Incident analysis – root cause to corrective action.


Physical demands



  • Ability to bend down (work under a desk or bench), stand for extended periods, and lift 50 lbs.


Salary and benefits


Salary range: $94,029 – $117,537 annually. Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. CAES provides a variety of benefits, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, 401(k), paid holidays and vacation. Generous PTO and 11 paid holidays per year; annual tuition reimbursement.
