Position Overview

The Mental Health Counseling Center (MHCC) at San Diego City College (SDCC) has been awarded a two‑year grant to work collaboratively with the Veterans Resource Center to enhance mental health support for student veterans. The Veterans Mental Health Counselor position is a dual role, with emphasis on psycho‑education, outreach, early intervention/prevention, community linkage, and a direct clinical role. The counselor will provide individual, couples, and family therapy, case management, resource referrals, workshops, group therapy, and outreach to student veterans, as well as organize and support student veteran peer mentors.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and expand partnerships with mental health providers, VA hospitals, county veterans service offices, and local/regional CSU/UC Veterans Resource Centers.
  • Provide direct mental health support through individual counseling, group therapy, case management, and resource development; lead outreach efforts to increase engagement with student veterans.
  • Lead development and delivery of Veterans Ally training programs for faculty, staff, and students, promoting a supportive veteran‑friendly campus culture.
  • Collaborate with the Mental Health Peer Educator Coordinator to hire, train, and supervise student veterans serving as Mental Health Peer Educators.
  • Regularly report program progress and outcomes to the Grant or Program Coordinator.
  • Work closely with campus partners to integrate veteran‑specific support services and participate in cross‑departmental meetings related to veterans' needs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, guidance counseling, social work, or related field from a regionally accredited institution; or an equivalent degree. A bachelor's degree with a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification.
  • Desired Qualifications:
  • Licensed or license‑eligible in California (MSW, MFT, PCC, or Psychologist) with experience in counseling, case management, or similar roles.
  • Experience in outreach, training, and program development, especially with diverse or underserved populations, and preferably in veteran or veteran‑affiliated settings.
  • Clinical experience with veterans, including PTSD, TBI, substance abuse, and mood disorders.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to build rapport with veteran students.
  • Knowledge of local veteran resources in San Diego and ability to connect students.
  • Expertise in clinical assessment, crisis intervention, and risk evaluation.
  • Organizational and administrative skills to meet grant deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Experience with data collection, reporting, and program oversight.
  • Proficiency with clinical software and technology for case management and reporting.
  • Ability to forge community partnerships and create care linkages for veteran students.
  • Professional liability insurance required.

Pre‑Employment Requirements

  • Submit official college transcripts.
  • Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam (renewable every 4 years).
  • Undergo Live Scan fingerprinting and receive clearance prior to first day of employment.
  • Present original documents proving eligibility to work in the United States.
