The Department of Ophthalmology is the only academic eye institution in the region offering the most advanced treatments across all areas of eye care. The Department of Ophthalmology sees over 120,000 patients a year with almost 5,400 surgeries.

The Comprehensive Optometrist works in various clinics focusing on cornea and specialty contact lenses, primary eye care, dry eye and ocular disease with involvement in urgent eye care. Has a broad scope of knowledge and experience in managing ocular disease and disorders of the eye and visual system to maximize visual function and eye health. This position has a focus on specialty contact lenses.

Provides cornea and specialty contact lens fittings, primary eye care including comprehensive eye examinations, and problem-focused examinations including for dry eye. Triages acute eye-related issues and provides urgent eye care including appropriate testing to diagnose, treat and manage ocular health conditions. Collaborates with ophthalmology department specialists and members of the healthcare community. Participates in teaching and research.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide cornea and specialty contact lens fittings and primary eye care including comprehensive eye examinations and problem-focused examinations (e.g., dry eye).
  • Triages acute eye-related issues and provides urgent eye care with appropriate testing to diagnose, treat and manage ocular health conditions.
  • Collaborate with ophthalmology department specialists and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in teaching and research activities.
  • Demonstrate professional judgment and apply industry practices and campus policies to resolve a wide range of issues.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in optometry issued by an accredited school/college of optometry
  • Optometry residency training in cornea and contact lenses
  • Thorough knowledge of optometry and skills essential to the duties of the position
  • Thorough knowledge of eye disease diagnosis
  • Ability to effectively communicate examination findings to patients
  • Demonstrated skill in fitting and prescribing specialty contact lenses
  • Ability to perform dry eye evaluations and provide appropriate treatment
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse client group and provide direction to staff
  • Ability to collaborate with staff, faculty, and healthcare professionals across the campus
  • Effective interpersonal skills and professional proficiency in delivering eye care, treatment, and diagnostic services
  • Experience using an electronic medical record system

Special Conditions
  • May need to travel to satellite clinics
  • May work varied hours including evenings or Saturdays

Pay transparency details: Annual Full Pay Range and Hourly Equivalent are unclassified with data not available; pay may be prorated if appointment is less than 100%.

Factors in determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business needs. The hiring pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range expected to be paid for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader due to internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements.

In-person skills assessments for life-support certifications and other required credentials may be necessary.
