A premier private club and resort in coastal San Diego is entering a pivotal phase of growth with an increased focus on health, wellness, and integrated member experiences.

With an established reputation in golf and racquet sports, the Club is evolving into a more holistic, lifestyle-driven destination. This role will lead the development and execution of fitness and wellness programming, connecting personal training, group fitness, recovery, and member engagement into a cohesive experience.

The position requires a balance of leadership and hands-on execution. The individual will oversee programming, support and develop team members and contractors, and step in to teach classes or provide instruction as needed to maintain quality and consistency.

The ideal candidate brings both operational discipline and creative vision, someone who can develop talent, refine offerings, and identify opportunities to elevate the overall member experience while driving participation and revenue.

Compensation:

  • Base Salary: $75,000-85,000 +/- depending on experience, paid bi-weekly.
  • Bonus Opportunities based on personal and business performance up to 20% of salary.

Position Summary

The Health & Wellness Manager is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and operational performance of the Wellness Center. This role oversees all fitness, spa, recovery, and holistic wellness services to ensure exceptional member experiences, strong team performance, and financial sustainability. The position is managerial in nature, focusing on staff leadership, operational systems, and business execution rather than personal service delivery. While the manager may occasionally provide class coverage to ensure continuity of service, this role does not include a personal training client base, treatment book, or commission-based compensation.

Primary Responsibilities

Program & Member Experience Oversight

  • Lead the design and delivery of integrated wellness programming across fitness, spa, recovery, and holistic offerings.
  • Ensure all health and wellness services meet established quality, safety, and service standards.
  • Oversee scheduling and execution of group fitness, personal training services, and spa/wellness programs to drive engagement.
  • Monitor member feedback, utilization, and key performance metrics to continuously improve offerings and experiences.
  • Partner with Membership and Marketing teams to promote wellness programs, events, and initiatives.

Operational Management

  • Manage daily operations of the wellness center, including staff scheduling, class coverage planning, and facility readiness.
  • Maintain oversight of equipment, treatment rooms, studios, and wellness spaces; communicate maintenance needs promptly.
  • Track departmental budgets, revenue, participation, and productivity metrics, ensuring alignment with financial goals.
  • Develop and maintain systems for attendance tracking, billing, reporting, and operational efficiency.

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, and support a diverse team including fitness professionals, group instructors, licensed spa providers, and front desk staff.
  • Oversee recruiting, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, and professional development plans.
  • Ensure staff compliance with all company policies, service standards, licensing, and certification requirements.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented team culture.

Revenue & Business Development

  • Partner with club leadership to develop strategies that drive sustainable wellness revenue across services and programs.
  • Identify opportunities for program expansion, improved utilization, and cross-department collaboration.
  • Monitor financial performance and adjust staffing models or programming to support profitability and experience quality.

Additional Duties

  • Provide occasional coverage for group fitness or wellness programming as needed to ensure service continuity; this role does not maintain a regular teaching or treatment schedule.
  • Support special projects, club initiatives, and interdepartmental programs as requested.
  • Promote safe work practices and maintain required certifications.
  • Represent the club professionally in all interactions with members, staff, and external partners.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health & Wellness, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in fitness, wellness, or health club operations, including program development.
  • Experience overseeing licensed spa professionals and modality-based wellness services (massage therapy, recovery, bodywork, esthetics).
  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership or managerial role overseeing staff and departmental operations.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience tracking departmental revenue and budgets.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and develop a team while driving operational excellence.
  • CPR certification and foundational fitness credential; equivalent leadership experience may substitute for specific certifications.

Preferred

  • Experience in private clubs, resorts, or high-end fitness environments.
  • Knowledge of wellness program development, including mind-body, recovery, and holistic wellness offerings.
  • Proficiency with scheduling platforms, fitness software, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional exposure to temperature changes and moderate noise.
  • Squatting, kneeling, reaching, grasping, twisting, and bending.
  • Talking, hearing, and seeing.

Work Schedule

  • Adherence to attendance requirements as outlined in the weekly schedule.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
